ROCK HILL – Mr. Charles Watson Long, Sr., 88, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
The funeral service will be held at 3:30pm on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill with Dr. Marshall Fant, III officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2-3pm at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
Born March 30, 1930 in Conway, SC, Mr. Long was a son of the late Albert H. Long and the late Alma W. Long. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Lewis Long and his sister, Mary Ann Stalvey. He was a graduate of Conway High School and a 1952 graduate of Clemson University. He was a First Lieutenant in the US Air Force serving during the Korean War and was stationed at Wright Air Development Center. In 1955, he and his family moved to Rock Hill where he worked for Celanese Fibers Company for ten years. He also worked for several other textile companies. In 1983, he opened Allied Engineering, Inc. and later opened Allied Technical Resources, Inc. He was CEO and General Manager of both companies.
He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, taught junior and senior high and was a member of the Board of Stewarts and active on the building committee. In 1986, he and his family joined Westminster Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and was active in Mission to the World. He was active in the prison ministry and compiled a Life Skills Manual to help inmates return to society and be a Christian.
He enjoyed square dancing and was a square dance caller. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his sons, Charles Watson Long, Jr. (Gail) of Yonges Island, SC and Lewis E. Long (Julie) of Rock Hill; his daughters, Mary Catharine Guicheney (Michel) of Burnsville, NC and Rachel Long Walker (Mark) of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren, Daniel Kersbergen, Brandon Kersbergen (Sarah), Heather Ayers (Josh), Hayley Drennon, Corey Drennon, Ivy Walker, Charlie Walker and Maggie Walker; and six great-grandchildren.
