ROCK HILL – Mr. Gaius F. “Gus” Allen, Jr., 91, passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at his home surrounded by family.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Oakland Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Hayes officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.

Born in Charlotte, NC, Gus grew up in Arden, NC and was the son of the late Gaius F. Allen, Sr. and the late Ella Margaret Lyda Miller.  He was a US Navy veteran and received the quilt of valor presented for his service during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Frank Roach Post 34. He was also a member of the Shepard Center and the Optimist International Club of Rock Hill.  He was a high school teacher and coach in SC and VA and was involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).  He is in the Batesburg Leesville Hall of Fame, the York County Athletic Hall of Fame, the Hermitage High School Hall of Fame in Richmond, VA and the South Carolina Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  He played both baseball and football at The University of South Carolina and will forever be a Gamecock.  He was an avid member of Oakland Baptist Church.

Gus was a man who structured his life around faith, family, football, and his loving wife, Jeri, whom he loved unconditionally for over 64 years.  As a teacher, coach, and mentor Gus instilled in everyone his work ethic, personal achievement, and perseverance. He was selfless and kind and always present in his children and grandchildren’s lives. Just like his family, Coach Allen was always there for his players.  No matter what his players athletic ability was, he never accepted less than what they were capable of.   Those fortunate enough to have their lives influenced by him will continue to carry on his legacy long after his death.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Geraldine W. “Jeri” Allen; his sons, Spencer Allen (Janice) of Blythewood and Michael Allen (Ronda) of Fort Mill; his daughter, Robin Shelton (Jerry) of Rock Hill; his grandchildren, Sadie Kirell (John), Amie Shillinglaw (Steven), Allison Melton (Henry Gunter), Parker Allen, Paige Allen, Michael Allen, Jr., Jaymes Allen and Lila-grace Thompson; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Tom Allen (Barbara) of Fredericksburg, VA; his sister, Sara-Beth Howard (Brian) of Lake Providence, LA; his niece, Gaiton Howard; his nephew, Tucker Howard; his sister-in-law, Shelby Sapp; and his brothers-in-law, Jimmy Sapp and Glenn Threatt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Allen’s name to The American Heart Association and any High School Football Program of choice.
