Rock Hill – Mr. Joel Underwood Farrar Sr., 84, passed away peacefully April 23, 2018 at his home in Rock Hill, SC.
Funeral service for Mr. Farrar will be Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Doctor Jeff Hayes officiating, assisted by Reverend Eddie Ramsey and Mr. Carlton P. Heustess, at Oakland Baptist Church, 1067 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC. Burial will be private. Visitation will be Friday, April 27, 2018 from 5:30 till 7:30 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC.
Mr. Farrar was born Febuary13, 1934 in Gastonia, North Carolina to the late John S. Farrar, Sr. and Minnie Elmore Farrar. Joel was a graduate of Gastonia High School and East Carolina University, Class of 1956. He was drafted into the US Army in 1957 and proudly served his country. After Mr. Farrar’s military service, he worked for Celanese Corporation for 40 years. As an active member of Oakland Baptist Church, Mr. Farrar enjoyed serving as a deacon, a greeter, and a member of various church committees. Mr. Farrar had numerous interests. His love for sports led him to spending time golfing and refereeing high school and college basketball for over 25 years. Mr. Farrar will be best remembered for his love for people. He was always one of the first to welcome visitors to Sunday school, worship services and other church activities.
Mr. Farrar is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Sara Hogue Farrar; his son, Joel Underwood Farrar, Jr., (Ragena) of Rock Hill; his daughter Lisa F. Culbreth (Craig) of Myrtle Beach. He was especially proud of his three granddaughters, Haley King (Tyler) of Columbia, Bethany Farrar of Rock Hill and Brittany F. Bennett (John) of Columbia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Joel was preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. John S. Farrar, Jr., Rev. William Farrar and Ralph Farrar and his sister Mrs. Geraldine F. Propst.
