ROCK HILL – John Harold Long, Sr., 79, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 in Rock Hill.
The funeral service will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 29, 2018 at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Dr. Rodney Powell officiating. Burial will be prior to the service at 1:15pm at Laurelwood Cemetery.
John was born on March 28, 1939 and was the son of the late Janie Lou Hines Long and the late Harold Grady Long of Rock Hill. He was also preceded in death by his son, John Long, Jr, and his brother, Marshall Long, Sr.
John graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1959 where he was a bus driver his senior year. He attended York Technical College and spent five years in the US Navy where he worked in the Pentagon in Washington, DC; and Ireland and England as a radio man. He also served on the USS Sampson Navy ship. He worked for 30 years with the United States Post Office, ending his career in 1996 as the Cherry Road Station Manager.
John was a member of Saint John’s United Methodist Church in Rock Hill. He was a volunteer with the Rock Hill Civitan Club and worked on most of their projects. He enjoyed helping neighbors and friends and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Leila Jane Potts Long; two sons, Brian Long and wife, Natalie and Michael Long and wife, Nicole; two grandsons, Caleb Long and Elliott Long and one granddaughter, Caitlin Long; two brothers, Eddie Long and Wayne Long, Sr.; and his sister, Brenda Long Griffith.
The family will receive friends from 4-5:30pm on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill and also following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Long’s name to Saint John’s United Methodist Church, Organ Fund, 321 S. Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
