Sam lived a long life. For the past four years, he swore it would be his last Christmas, birthday, and Thanksgiving—but every year came around, and he was still here. He was scared of his disease, Alzheimer’s. He watched many people in his family die because of it, and he never wanted that to be him. So he took the disease like he takes everything else in life… with laughter. When he poured tea in his cereal instead of milk, he ate it anyway, with a smile. He always said, “it’s better to laugh than to cry.” That’s what he wants everyone to do now. Share his stories, share his love, and most importantly, share a laugh.
Sam had a laugh that started in his belly, bouncing up and down until it reached his cheeks. His laugh and smile were infectious, lighting up the whole room.
Sam loved to make people laugh, and he was an amazing storyteller. Some of his favorite stories were about growing up on a farm. He would have to fill a freestanding tub with water to take a bath. One day, he had just filled his tub with bath water when his sister jumped in first—so of course he got mad and flipped it over on her.
If you knew Sam, you know he was always thinking of a way to make a dollar. He worked as an optician for 40 years, and when he “retired” he opened up a video store, then a restaurant. He loved to feed people, and he worked every day at his restaurant, Sam’s Grill, on and off in different locations for over 10 years with his wife Shirley by his side.
For so long, Sam was terrified to die. He would always say, “If I’m not here, I’ll be over there.” He’s over there now, reunited with his parents, brother, and sister, and he sees there was nothing to be afraid of.
Sam is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Jacobs; his sisters, Dorothy (Jacobs) Harrelson and Cindy (Jacobs) Prevatt; his four children, Jerry Jacobs, Carol (Jacobs) Robinson, Becky (Jacobs) Mead, and Renee (Jacobs) Mullins; his grandchildren, Lori Robinson, Stacy Robinson, Crissy Jacobs, Jonathan Jacob (JJ) Mead, Danny Mullins, Brad Mullins, and Christy (Mullins) Deines; and his seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alford and Rosie Jacobs; his brother, Isiah Jacobs; and his sister, Faye (Jacobs) Johnson. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made in Sam’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association of SC, 4124 Clemson Boulevard, #L, Anderson, SC 29621.
