ROCK HILL – His very best days were spent on the Rock Hill farm that had been in his family for several generations. So, it seemed only fitting that Mr. William Elie Russell, Sr. took his final ride into the sunset on this same property. At the age of 81, our beloved father, brother, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2019 with his children and favorite dog, Lettie, by his side.
He graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1954 and the University of South Carolina in 1959. He served as a Vice President for Peoples First Insurance Agency in Rock Hill for 43 years. Mr. Russell was an ordained Elder for Bethesda Presbyterian Church in York, and served as President of the Rock Hill Jaycees, United Way, Red Cross, and the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Rock Hill Elks Club for 57 years. Mr. Russell was a United States Jaycee Ambassador and Junior Chamber International Senator.
Besides spending time with his children, family and friends, he enjoyed hunting, gardening, riding his horses and watching Gamecock sports and Duke Basketball.
Mr. Russell was born November 14, 1937. He is survived by his children, William E. Russell, Jr., M. Todd Russell (Martina) and Tanya Russell (Angela), as well as his loving sister, Terry Callahan (Roger); two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elie B. Russell and Louise Adkins Russell and many, many close friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 26th from 12:00 pm to 1:30pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill. A graveside service will follow at Grandview Memorial Park on Cherry Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Russell’s name to Bethesda Presbyterian Church or the charity of choice.
