In Loving Memory of Deniece “Niecey” Sutton Hooper
October 17, 1951 – March 8, 2026
“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” – Proverbs 31:25-26
Deniece “Niecey” Sutton Hooper, known affectionately to everyone as “Mawmaw,” went home to be with her Lord on March 8, 2026. She passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by the family she cherished so dearly.
A devoted Christian, Niecey loved the Lord with all her heart, and her faith was the foundation of the kindness and warmth she extended to everyone she met. She was an avid member of the CYMAN group and loved the simple joy of a bingo game, but her greatest earthly treasure was her family—especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Sutton; and her sons, Michael and Richard Sutton of Rock Hill, SC. Her memory is cherished by her stepdaughters, Amy Jurende (Roger) and Lori Hooper (Vicki B.) of Greenville, SC; and her “chosen sisters,” Johnnie Lene Drake of La Vergne, TN, Patti Combs of Mt. Vernon, IL, and Judy Clark of Rock Hill, SC. Mawmaw’s legacy lives on through her sister-in-law, Jackie Burton; niece, Angie Burton; and nephew, David Burton, all of Lancaster, SC. She was the proud grandmother of Matt Sutton, Katie Sutton (Matt R.), Mikey Sutton, Kylie Sutton, and Heather Sutton-Nguyen Justin Payne, all of Rock Hill, SC. Her light continues to shine in her great-grandchildren: Jaxon Sutton, Scotty Redmond, Maverick Redmond, Mackenzie Sutton, Elijah Nguyen, and Cali Nguyen, as well as many extended loved ones and friends. Niecey was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Ganus; her husband Gerald “Jay” Hooper; her brother, Paul Burton; her son, Scott Sutton; her grandson Joey Sutton; and her great-granddaughter Brylon Sutton; step son, Jody Hooper.
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” — Revelation 21:4
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 2 PM at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chpael, 355 E. White Street, Rock Hill, South Carolina. Following the service, a graveside ceremony will take place at Grandview Memorial Park, 620 South Cherry Road, Rock Hill, South Carolina.
