Bernhard “Bernd” Veerkamp passed away on March 24, 2026. Born in Ahlde, Germany, Bernd carried with him throughout his life a warmth and openness that made every conversation feel like a reunion with an old friend.

Though he lived for many years with multiple sclerosis, Bernd never complained. He faced every challenge with strength, humor, and an unwaveringly positive spirit. His resilience was quiet but powerful — he simply refused to let hardship diminish his joy or his love for the world around him.

Bernd genuinely enjoyed people. He loved meeting strangers, striking up conversations, and making others feel welcome and valued. Wherever he went, he brought laughter, lightness, and a sense that life was meant to be enjoyed, no matter the circumstances.

He was always about having a good time, embracing each day with gratitude and a smile. His positive attitude wasn’t just a trait — it was a gift he shared generously with everyone in his life.

Bernd will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, joy, and resilience will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away just 56 days prior; his ten siblings; and his grandson, Austin Hobbs.

He is survived by his son, Rainer Veerkamp (Kimberly), and his brother, “Joop” Joseph Veerkamp.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Bernhard Veerkamp to Agape Hospice, 1326 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732, or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4601 Charlotte Park Drive, Suite 130, Charlotte, NC 28217.
