Rock Hill, SC – Mr. Jack A. Matthews, 88, of Rock Hill, peacefully passed away at his home on June 8, 2026.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 12, 2026 at Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Reverend Tim Tefft officiating. Visitation will follow in the church social hall.

Born in Rock Hill, Jack was the son of the late James Owen Matthews and the late Estelle Matthews. He was a member of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church in Chester, SC.

After graduating Rock Hill High School, Jack attended Clemson University for a year, served in the U.S. Army for two years, and then worked at Celanese until his retirement. When he retired, Jack continued to tend to his cows that he started as a project with the 4-H Club as a teenager. Along with his wife Carolyn, he also helped to maintain their church’s property and cemetery grounds at Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church.

Jack is survived by his son, Owen Matthews and his wife, Carol; his daughter, Teresa Matthews, and his grandchildren, Shannon M. Dickerson (Cole); and Mitchell Matthews (fiancé, Nina). He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Paul Shuping of Rock Hill, and Robert Shuping (Pat Denton) of Morganton, NC; and his sisters-in-law, Dell C. Matthews of Rock Hill and Verna Dean Shuping of Morganton, NC.  Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn S. Matthews and his brother, J. Lindsay Matthews, Sr.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Jack’s primary caregivers, John Gillespie and Stephanie Roberts, and to Agape Hospice Care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jack’s name to Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church, 3087 Fishing Creek Road, Chester, SC 29706.
