Rock Hill, SC – Dora Hutcheson Bowman, age 86, unexpectedly but peacefully passed away at her residence on the afternoon of June 30, 2026.
Raised in Rock Hill, Dora was the oldest daughter of the late Lt. Col. Jack R. and Lillian Dunlap Hutcheson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jim Bowman, and her younger Sister, Wills Shores.
After graduating from college with a degree in English, Dora spent several years teaching at Independence Elementary School as well as substitute teaching throughout the local school district while her children were young. However, her greatest achievements were her roles as wife to Jim, mother to Jamie and Dede, and friend to many.
Dora was a longtime member of the Rock Hill Debutante Club. Etiquette and proper manners were a priority for her, defining what it meant to be a true southern lady. As well, she was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. As her friends and family know, she absolutely loved listening to Elvis & watching Steve Harvey. Just a few of her many hobbies included rescuing and caring for all types of animals big and small, gardening, reading and writing poetry, golf, painting, tennis, and playing Bridge.
Dora is survived by her son, Jamie Bowman (Virginia); her daughter, Dede Bowman-Johnston (James); her grandson, Chip Bowman; her brother, Dr. Robert Hutcheson (Charlene); her beloved cat, Lilly, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dora was a very independent person but later in life came to know Twaneka Jamison who became not only a good friend but also her personal assistant. Twaneka and her two boys, (Tootie and Nolan) were highly adored by Dora and such a blessing to her both before and after the death of her husband, Jim.
In Dora’s words, her life could be summed up in this one short quote: “She Lived, She Loved, She died”.
