Rock Hill, SC – Joan Kirkland Brooks departed this life on July 10, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born in Wilmington, NC, Joan was the daughter of the late Viola Riedel Kirkland and the late Lt Col DeWitt Greer. She was also the adopted daughter of the late Lt Col E. H. Kirkland.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Brooks; daughter, Jennifer Ray; son, Ken Brookins; granddaughter, Kayce Brookins; and son-in-law, Bob Tatarka.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Joan entered the world of nursing. She dedicated herself to caring for others in a career that spanned more than 40 years until her retirement from Westminster Towers.

Joan’s compassion extended to all living creatures. She loved all animals and welcomed them with an open heart. While many may have overlooked them, Joan saw beauty and value in every creature, including a possum and raccoon that took up residence outside her home.

Spring and Fall were two of Joan’s favorite seasons. Prior to her declining health, Joan found great joy in working in her yard. She loved tending to her plants and flowers and took pride in creating a beautiful outdoor space.

Football season was one of her favorite times of the year. A lifelong football fan, Joan faithfully cheered for the Carolina Panthers, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Florida Gators.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Lori Tatarka and Noelle Brooks (Phillip): her grandchildren, Meagan James, Josh Brookins, Zach Tatarka (Bailey), and Raven Renee; and seven great-grandchildren.

Joan is also survived by her brothers-in-law, David Brooks and Butch Brooks (Melanie).

The family will receive and welcome friends on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11am at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Burial will be private.

Though Joan has left this earthly life, the seeds of love, kindness, and compassion she planted will continue to flourish in the hearts of those she loved. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
