Verna Carol Newton, 83, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, she was the beloved daughter of the late William Henry Newton and Ima Love Jones and was preceded in death by her cherished “big” sister, Jimmie Lou.
A retired guidance counselor with the New York City Board of Education, Verna devoted her life to helping high school students meet the challenges of school and life. Whether offering support with assignments, encouraging students to discover their passions and future careers, or listening with care when life felt overwhelming, she had a remarkable gift for making every young person feel seen, capable, and valued. Her unwavering belief in the potential of young people—and her dedication to guiding them toward who they could become—was truly her calling. Through her steady presence and heartfelt encouragement, she helped countless students blossom and step confidently into the world.
Verna’s compassion extended far beyond the classroom. She was a tireless advocate for animal rights, justice, and a passionate champion of women’s rights. Completing her master’s degree in social work was a milestone she cherished, that highlighted her lifelong decision to empower and serve others. She had a profound appreciation for the arts, frequently attending theatrical performances, musicals, symphonies, and exploring museums. She found deep peace and joy in the beauty of nature and worked to protect it. Through her example, she inspired countless others to appreciate the natural world and become thoughtful stewards of the environment.
She is survived by her longtime friend and spiritual grandson, Jose Cardoza; her close friends Mary Ann Well Cassidy, Madaleine Falk, Eida Diaz Fraizer, and Karen Dodds; former students Sulekha, Meryleen, Reynaldo, Natalie, and Archi; as well as many others whose lives were enriched by her generosity, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to justice. The impact of Verna’s kindness, wisdom, courage, love and advocacy will continue to echo through the many lives she touched.
