Mrs. Barbara Nelson Sealy, 91, of Rock Hill, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, 2026, surrounded by family.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Brian D. Sealy (June) of Richmond, VA; her three grandchildren: Jon Sealy (Emily) of Richmond, VA, Michelle Sealy of Rock Hill, and Brandi Sealy of Rock Hill; and her seven great-grandchildren: Bailey, Marley, Joseph, Gavin, Jacob, Helen Ann, and Lydia. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, O. Walter Sealy; her son, Carl F. Sealy; her parents, Paul and Edwina (Brush) Nelson; and her sisters, Bette Pazary and Carol Nelson.
Barbara was born in Cromwell, CT, on March 24, 1935. After graduating high school, she went to work for Travelers Insurance and enjoyed shopping trips to New York City and attending concerts, including a then-unknown Elvis Presley. She met Walt at a Polish dance while he was in Connecticut for Navy submarine training, and she then traveled alone by bus to meet her future in-laws in Chester, SC. The couple married in 1955, and they lived all over the world during Walt’s Navy career, including stations in Italy, Hawaii, and Guam, before returning to settle in Rock Hill.
Wherever they lived, Barbara made a home because taking care of her family was her greatest joy. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all had the privilege of getting to know her. Affectionately known as “Granny” (even by children in the neighborhood), she will be remembered for her strength as the family matriarch, her love and patience, her quiet but sly wit, her joy from shopping in thrift and antique stores, her eclectic taste in books and TV shows, her sense of service as a Christian, and a turkey cooking on Thanksgiving that “smells like Granny’s house.”
A private ceremony will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Neely’s Creek ARP Church, 974 Neely’s Creek Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730 or a charity of your choice.
