Whitney, 69, passed peacefully Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026 at Chandler Place Memory Care with his wife Martha at his side.
Whitney was born in Charlotte, NC on August 23, 1957 to Whitney Donald (Don) and Betty Mulkey Hines. He was their first of three children.
He graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1975. He played trumpet in the marching and pep bands. He attended Winthrop University for a year, playing on their soccer team, before transferring to the University of South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Whitney was always an avid Gamecock fan.
Whitney’s career in retail began in North Myrtle Beach but took him to several towns and cities managing and opening very large stores and several smaller stores. In Lake Park, GA, it was a new Carolina Pottery as manager. He won an award from the Carolina Pottery Company for his managerial work at that store and moved to Lexington, KY and another Carolina Pottery. Feeling too far from family and friends, Whitney relocated to Charleston working as a department head at James Island Walmart, where he met his wife Martha. He later worked at Pusser’s of the West Indies in downtown Charleston. Whitney eventually returned to Rock Hill to manage a Dollar General store. In 2002, Whitney and friends Tim Duncan and Dennis Edwards opened Peoples Pharmacy in Clover, SC. It was his proudest professional achievement. The Peoples Pharmacy was community-centered and reached out to local schools and Whitney became involved with the community. His final retail experience came as a stocker at Ollie’s of Rock Hill.
Whitney is survived by his wife Martha S. Hines; sister Melissa Hines Monroe (Max) of Easley, SC; niece Maris J. Monroe of Easley, SC.
Whitney was preceded in death by his parents Whitney Donald (Don) and Betty Mulkey Hines; and sister Carol L. Hines.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church on Monday, October 5, 2026 at 2 P.M.
