Harriett Louise Slaton Mitchum, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully departed this life on October 7, 2026. Born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Harriett was the cherished daughter of William Pressley Slaton and Louise Barton Slaton.
Harriett was preceded in death by her loving parents and her dear brother, Bill Slaton.
Harriett shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Joseph Danny Mitchum. Together, they were blessed with two wonderful daughters, Dana Moree, married to Bryan, and Lynn Mitchum, both residing in Rock Hill, SC. Her grandsons, Eric, along with his wife Abby, and Alex, were her pride and joy. Harriett also leaves behind her beloved sister, Carol Julian, who resides in Vacaville, CA.
Harriett’s educational journey began with her high school graduation, after which she pursued further studies at a technical college. Harriett’s professional life was marked by dedication and excellence, as she worked with companies such as Exxon, Celanese, Homelite, and finally as a secretary for a professor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. She retired at the age of 65, having touched many lives through her work.
Beyond her professional achievements, Harriett cherished family gatherings. Her love for travel took her to many places, yet she found her true solace in the simple pleasures of reading and basking in the sun, especially at the beach.
Harriett’s life was graced by the enduring friendship of her childhood companion, Helen Helms, a testament to her loyal and loving nature.
A celebration of Harriett’s life will be held on October 10, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Lakewood Baptist Church, located at 3520 Mt Gallant Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM. Following the service, Harriett will be laid to rest at Forest Hills Cemetery, 4290 Old York Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in memory of Harriett to Gentiva Hospice, 223 South Herlong Ave, Rock Hill, SC.
