Walter Arthur Ace “Big Ace”
February 18, 1957 – October 18, 2026
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Walter Arthur Ace, affectionately known to everyone as “Big Ace.” He passed away on October 18, 2026, at the age of 69.
Born on February 18, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri, Walter was raised in Portageville, Missouri. He attended Southeast Missouri State University before making Rock Hill, South Carolina, his home in 1984, where he built a life filled with family, friendships, laughter, and countless memories. To those who knew him, he was more than a friend or family member. He was a larger-than-life personality with a heart to match—a man who never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel welcome.
Big Ace lived life on his own terms. He laughed hard, played hard, and loved even harder. He had a generous spirit, a big heart, and a personality that could fill a room. Whether he was sharing a laugh, enjoying a good meal, watching his favorite sports, or simply spending time with the people he loved, he found joy in life’s simple moments. His love of cooking brought people together, and his love for his family was at the center of everything that mattered most to him.
Walter worked as a CNC machinist for more than 35 years, dedicating decades of his life to his craft. His years of hard work reflected his commitment and perseverance, but his greatest legacy will never be measured by his career. It will be measured by the people he loved, the lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Above all else, Big Ace was a devoted father. His children were a tremendous part of his life, and the bond they shared will forever remain part of his legacy. In his final moments, his children were blessed with the opportunity to be by his side. Although saying goodbye was heartbreaking, they are deeply grateful to have been with him at the end, holding close the love and memories they will carry forever.
Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tammie Ace; his sister, Sherry Riley; his father, Gene Underwood; and his beloved mother, Wilma Underwood.
He leaves behind his loving children: son David Douglas and his wife, Sarah; son Tanner Ace and his wife, Heather; and daughter Tara Ace and her fiancé, David. He also leaves behind his seven cherished grandchildren: Dylan, Kaylee Mac, Ethan, Zack, Trevor, Aniyah, and Evie, as well as his beloved great-granddaughter, Laney. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Rita Owen and Robin Allen.
His family was one of his greatest blessings, and his love for them will continue through the generations. Though they must now learn to navigate life without his physical presence, the love, laughter, stories, and memories they shared with Big Ace will remain in their hearts forever.
Though their hearts are broken by his passing, his family finds comfort in knowing that the impact of his life will never be forgotten. The stories, laughter, lessons, and memories he leaves behind will continue to bring family and friends together. There will always be a place at the table for him, a story that brings him to mind, and a moment when a familiar laugh or cherished memory reminds everyone of Big Ace.
Our faith reminds us that while we grieve the loss of someone we love, we do not grieve without hope. We take comfort in God’s promise of eternal life and trust that Walter is now at peace in the presence of his Heavenly Father, reunited with loved ones who went before him.
Rest easy, Big Ace. Thank you for the love you gave, the laughter you shared, and the memories you leave behind. You were loved more than words can express, and you will be missed more than words can ever say. Although your time here has ended, your legacy will live on in your children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, family, and everyone fortunate enough to have known you.
Until we meet again, may you rest in God’s eternal peace. You will forever be loved, forever be missed, and never be forgotten.
The family will receive visitors at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, located at 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. The service will take place at 2:30 p.m., with the graveside service to follow At Forest Hills Cemetery.
