Rock Hill, SC – Claudia Ann Summers Jenkins, 96, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024, in Rock Hill.
Claudia Ann was born to the late Jacob West Summers and Claudia Mewborne Summers on December 22, 1928, in “The Stucco House” in Orangeburg, SC. As a college freshman, she traveled with her roommate to New York City for the Army Navy game. A highlight event of the trip was attending a private radio broadcast of Frank Sinatra at CBS studios.
She married Walter Thomas Jenkins Jr. in 1948 and graduated from Winthrop College in 1949. After raising her four children, she formed Bridal Services and was a bridal consultant for over 30 years. As a wedding director, she sent many brides down the aisle “properly”. She enjoyed gardening, music, and South Carolina history. She appreciated good manners and proper grammar.
She was a former board member of the YMCA, the American Red Cross in Rock Hill and the Museum of York County. She served on the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour and was an active member of The Catawba Chapter of the DAR, the Glencairn Garden Club and many other civic and social organizations.
She is survived by her four children, Walter Thomas Jenkins III, Claudia Jenkins McKay (Fred), West Moss Jenkins (Tammy) and Susan “Susu” Jenkins Cox (Ed); her sister, Susan Summers Masaschi; her seven granddaughters, Laura (Matt), Elizabeth, Caroline (Sean), Emily (Ryan), Charlotte (John), Ally (Michael) and Annie; her nine great-grandchildren; her numerous nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law, Freda Stokes Summers.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Walter Thomas “Buddy” Jenkins Jr.; her brother, Jacob West Summers Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Linda Westerberg Jenkins and her nephews, Bennett Masaschi and Frank Masaschi.
Funeral service at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 144 Caldwell Street, Rock Hill on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow in Lumpkin Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Museum of York County, the Humane Society of York County, or Tunnel to Towers (T2T.org).
