Caroleen Sanders a resident of the Catawba Indian Nation passed away on 2/9/25. Caroleen was a traditional Catawba potter, professional dog trainer who raised German Shepherds that she absolutely adored and loved and a beautician by trade.

She was born and raised on the Catawba Indian Reservation. Her mother Verdie Sanders passed this trade on to Caroleen as a young child. She studied the pottery making skill under many master potters and began making pottery much later in life. Since becoming a potter, she has accomplished so much, she was a board member of the Cultural Center on the Reservation and was extensively involved in the growth of the pottery tradition. You can view her pottery in many museums such as “The Catawba Valley Pottery & Antique Festival and at the North Carolina Pottery Museum. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints and attended faithfully on the Catawba Reservation.

Caroleen was preceded in death by her father William Andrew Sanders, her mother Verdie Sanders, brothers Louie, and Clark Sanders as well as her sisters Coleen Scott, Renda Potts and Lougene Wells. She leaves behind two sisters Ruthie Johnson and Sandra D. Smith as well as many nieces and nephews who adored and loved her.

A graveside service for Mrs. Sanders will be 3:00 pm, Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at the Catawba LDS Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 pm, Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC.
