John Henry Chappell III, DVM, 66, passed away peacefully at home with his wife, Athena, by his side, on Monday, September 8, 2025. John was born February 17, 1959, the son of Curwood Powell Chappell and the late Virgie Hadis Hefner Chappell. He was also proceeded in death by his paternal grandparents, John Henry Chappell and Eva Porter Chappell and his maternal grandparents, James Dallas Hefner, and Dora Arizona Aldridge Hefner.
John is survived by his wife, Athena Alice Chappell; his adopted daughter, Zoe Harmon Chappell; his sister, Betty Ann Helms (proceeded in death, Darrell) of Rock Hill; brothers, Rev. James Powell “Jimmy” Chappell (Faye) of Ft. Lawn, and Harvey Glenn Chappell (Vanesa) of Rock Hill.
John graduated from Catawba Academy, Clemson University, and Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine. He was the owner and veterinarian of Chappell Animal Hospital, Rock Hill, SC, for 37 years. He was an alumnus of Tuskegee University, an active member of SC Association of Veterinarians, American Veterinarians Medical Association and American Association of Equine Practitioners.
John was an avid supporter both professionally and personally to the people and animals of York County. He was a serving member of Cornerstone Assemblies of God, York, SC. He truly enjoyed being a veterinarian, spending time at his farm with his loving, caring wife of 22 years, Athena, and daughter, Zoe, his classic cars, and singing.
John brightened up any room with his peaceful, loving, story-telling character. He was a dedicated hardworking man that was full of life and humor, he was Virgie’s son, no doubt. He had a great love for both people and animals. There was not a place, including Alaska, we would go, and John not be met by a veterinary client. It was so amazing how much his clients loved and thought of him. John will be greatly missed as a loving husband, wonderful dad, awesome veterinarian, and beloved son and brother.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:30 pm on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel. Burial will follow in Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
My forever beloved husband and best friend, you brought purpose and joy to my life. I will dearly miss and always cherish you, the loving, compassionate husband and friend to people and animals you always were.
