Andrew James McDaniel, 83, peacefully fell asleep in his home with his family and woke in the arms of Jesus on September 5,2025.
Andrew was born August 20th, 1942 in Hemingway SC to the late Louin T. and Ethel Cribb McDaniel. Andrew (most commonly known as Toby) served and retired from the US Coast Guard from 1959 until 1980. He was lifelong proud of his service and the value he found in the Coast Guard. He often bragged that he was too young to serve but, not being a fan of formal schooling, his dad signed for him so he could join at the tender age of 17. He later found a second career in managing anything required of a Hanaverian Horse farm (Indian Land Farm) and a lifelong friendship and genuine bond with the farm’s owner, Hans Lengers and his family.
Toby had the ability to single-handedly figure out how to do anything! Toby was an avid storyteller and loved nothing more than sharing the events that remained close to his heart. He loved hunting, fishing and woodworking and proudly labored over special pieces for his family including hand-built cradles and grandfather clocks. He spent his life serving others until a very serious accident took away his physical ability to do so.
Toby is survived by three stepsons, Jimmy Shelley (Karen), Allen Shelley (Jennifer), and Greg Ragland (Sandy). In his healthy years he cherished time with his grandson, Kamren Shelley, whom he built a special car seat in his work van for so he could carry him to the farm and other facilities he cared for even as a baby. He also loved dearly his granddaughter, Lilly Shelley. He took on with genuine love his adopted granddaughters, Lana and Serenity, who in his last years became as well caregivers. He is survived by 2 brothers: Jerry L. (Joyce) of Salters, SC; Johnny M. of Summerville, SC as well as many nieces and nephews. He had a genuine love and respect for his caretaker over the last 4 years of his life, Ginny Howe.
