Ann Eloise Jackson Bartle, 81, passed away August 6, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, she moved often with family until graduating from Melbourne High School, Florida, and later Winthrop College, where she studied art and earned a degree in history. After graduation, she married her college sweetheart, Bill Bartle, and worked as a social worker before starting her family.

Eloise was known for her dry wit and sometimes offbeat humor. She told it like she saw it. She seldom pulled her punches, and her honesty could be brutally frank, particularly if it involved advocating for anyone in her family. She enjoyed talking to people—maybe striking up conversations with a total stranger most of all. She often sought out those in the crowd she thought needed a kind word. It was part of her ability to see the worth in anyone.

Eloise built her life around her family—her children and grandchildren. She loved them all in a special way that cherished the qualities she thought made each unique. Even when Bill’s work caused them to move away for a time, the family was always first on her mind.

Eloise enjoyed her home. She never claimed to be good in the kitchen, but she was. She loved flowers and gardening and getting her hands in the dirt. She possessed a creative mind that embraced all forms of art. She enjoyed painting, though she never adopted a particular style or medium; her interests varied too much for that. In later years, when she couldn’t sleep through the night, she would get up and paint.

She was not a regular churchgoer but had faith in a power larger than this world.

Eloise was preceded in death by her parents, William Morgan and Virginia Futral Jackson.

She is survived by those who loved her and will miss her very much: Bill, her husband of 58 years; daughters Katherine Bartle Gigis (Paul) and Virginia Ann Stewart (Scott); son Will Bartle (Michelle); and her beloved grandchildren, Ellie Gigis, Ann Marie Gigis, Jeffrey Stewart, Quinn Bartle, and Wade Bartle. Also surviving are her sisters, Susan Nahay and Gina Speare (Reb), and sister-in-law, Deborah Bartle.

A funeral service for Eloise Bartle will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732, with Pastor Gary Ledbetter officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery, 4290 Old York Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the charity of your choice.
