Her love, laughter, and smile will be dearly missed by all. Ann McCullough peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 19th, with her husband by her side.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 2 p.m. in the community room of Park Pointe Village (an Acts Retirement Life Community), 3025 Chesbrough Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
Born in Wadesboro, NC in 1946, Ann was the daughter of the late John Clifton Short, Sr. and the late Margaret Wilson Short. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Short, Jr., his wife Mickie Short, and nephew Will Short.
Growing up in Wadesboro, Ann was very active in school and in church, including: Cheerleader, Homecoming court, Girls Auxiliary (GA’s), Baptist Training Union, was in “Sword Drill”, awarded “Queen with a Scepter”, winner of “State Level Bible Memory Work”, and in the Choir. Ann said, “Whenever the Church doors were open, my friends and I were there”. She loved going to Camp Caswell.
She attended Wingate and Eastern Carolina Universities. After college she worked in Charlotte at Wachovia Bank and then Data Processing of the South (DPS) in supervision and office management. At DPS Ann met and married her husband, Larry. During his information technology (IT) career they lived in North Carolina, south Florida, Pennsylvania, and back to South Carolina, where they retired. During their relocations, Ann had a special gift of being able to always turn their house into a “home”, she would get them involved into a church, meet new neighbors, make friends, and get them involved in the community. Ann loved tennis, golf (Ann had a Hole-in-One…Larry never did) playing games, cards (especially bridge), family visits, entertaining our guests, travel (road trips, tour bus trips, and cruises), attending plays and concerts, learned and taught Maj Jong, was a Reiki Master, active in Jaycees, volunteered in the community (team leader for Adopt-a-Highway in PA, and in SC),and at church, serving on various church committees and boards. Ann traveled extensively throughout the USA, many times to Mexico, Canada, Caribbean, nineteen countries in Europe, and also to Japan, India, Costa Rica, and Aruba. While living in the area, Ann loved taking visitors to tour Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Key West, and to tour Philadelphia, the Amish country and Atlantic City (she liked to play “the slot machines”). She especially enjoyed riding the train into New York City, Macy’s Thanksgiving Parades, walking Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, Time Square, and attending Broadway plays. Ann also always loved the beach, Wilson Family Beach Trips, trips to Swansboro, Ocean Isle, Myrtle Beach, good seafood (shrimp & flounder), shag dancing, Carolina Beach Music, and anything sung by Dionne Warwick. At the beach, she loved sunbathing, watching a full moon rising from the ocean, sunsets, collecting beautiful shells, and shopping for bargains. Her friends and family have said, “Ann is a fun-loving girl, caring, giving, honest, devoted, dependable and is aways fun to be around.”
For several years, Ann was a strong, courageous fighter against ovarian cancer. She was admired, respected, and loved by many of her nurses, her doctors, and staff. Both, Ann and Larry, wish to thank each of them for their guidance and help along her journey.
Left to cherish Ann’s memory are her beloved husband of 50 years, Larry McCullough, her brother, Don Short (Ann), nephews Jay Short (Carolyn), Max Elizondo (Cecily), nieces Dede Smith (Tim), Marlo McDonald (Bobby), Mindy Rodenburg (Todd), Kristin Dawsey (Jason), great nephews Jake, Andy, Mac, Ryder, Grey, Matt, great nieces Kila, Abby, Carson, Anna, Lucy, one amazing aunt – Mary Jo, dozens of wonderful cousins, great friends and dear neighbors.
