Chester, SC – Cheryl Ann Long, 75, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025 at MUSC-Lancaster Medical Center.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC with Reverend Jerry Devinney officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 pm-1:50 pm, prior to the service.
Born in New Orleans, LA, Cheryl was the daughter of the late Bernard Brown and the late Amelia Carlini Brown. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Nelson and her brother, John Brown. Cheryl was retired from the Rock Hill School District where she proudly served as a school bus driver for more than 25 years. Her route was with Rock Hill High School, which gave her the opportunity to meet so many students who loved her as much as she loved them. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, fishing, and bird watching. You could also often find her cross-stitching and coloring on her iPad. Cheryl adored her 2 dogs, Scooter and Skeeter, but more than anything else, she loved her family.
Her granddaughter, Samantha Armstrong shared the following tribute that perfectly summarizes the way she and so many others thought of Cheryl: “One of the hardest phone calls you can ever receive is the news that someone you love deeply has passed away. And today I received that call. My grandma was truly the best. She always listened and offered advice, even if I didn’t want to hear it (she was usually right). She always put everyone else first, making her plate last at family gatherings, making sure every single person had a gift under the Christmas tree, and even keeping hotdogs on hand because she knew I liked them over cheeseburgers. She let me hide out in her room to play Nintendo when I needed a break from the chaos during family gatherings, made the best sweet tea (it was as always stocked in the fridge), and loved so fiercely. She never wanted anyone to be upset with her, right up to her very last days.”
Surviving are her husband, Mark Long; her daughters, Tammy Hazelton and Cindy Paquette; her sons, Terry Hazelton, Bruce McDowell, and Mark Long, Jr; her brother, Larry Brown of Louisiana; 15 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.
