ROCK HILL – Mrs. Elsie Phillips Mangum, 89, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023 at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with Rev. Jamie Burdette officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112.
Born in Marshville, NC, Mrs. Mangum was the daughter of the late Johnsie Harris Phillips and Charles Houston Phillips, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence William Mangum, Jr.; her daughter, Karen Mangum Loflin; and her brother, Charles Phillips Jr. She grew up on farms in Marshville and Mooresville, NC and then moved to the city of Monroe, NC. There, she met and married her husband Clarence William Mangum, Jr. During their 65 years of marriage, they lived in Coral Gables, FL for several years, and then relocated to Rock Hill, SC, where Elsie lived until her death.
Elsie worked at Belk Department Store in Monroe, NC until she had children. Then she became a full-time homemaker, where she was a loving mother to her two children, Greg and Karen. Elsie also loved flowers and working in her yard. In addition, she was an avid reader of Christian fiction books. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Rock Hill where she enjoyed participating in outreach activities with her Sunday School class.
Surviving are her son, Greg Mangum of Euless, TX; and her granddaughter, Kaylen Loflin Shannon.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
