In Loving Memory of James Robert “Slim” Hinson, Jr.
James Robert Hinson, Jr., affectionately known to family and friends as “Slim,” passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, at the age of 84 after a courageous journey with vascular dementia.
Born on September 30, 1941, Jimmy lived a life defined by hard work, generosity, faith in people, and an unwavering love for his family. He never met a stranger and believed that everyone deserved kindness, respect, and a helping hand. Whether lending support to family, friends, neighbors, or someone he had just met, James found genuine joy in giving. His legacy is not only in what he accomplished, but in the countless lives he touched along the way.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Pressley Hinson; his two daughters, Angie Hinson Perry (Jim Perry) and Tracey Hinson Reynolds (Jeff DeJesus); and his five beloved grandchildren: Van James Perry, Pressley Margaret McKenzie (Josiah McKenzie), Hinson Nicholas Perry, Alexander Margaret Reynolds (“Zan”), and Stephen Alexander Reynolds III (“Lex”). Each grandchild shared a special and unique relationship with their grandfather, and each carries treasured memories of his love, encouragement, humor, and generous spirit. Jimmy is also survived by his only sibling, Nita Hinson Payne and her daughter, Donna Payne Smith (Curtis Smith) and son Connor Smith (Allison Smith)
Jimmy dedicated 28 years of his career to DuPont while also pursuing another passion—farming. He was an exceptionally hardworking man whose fields produced acres of watermelons and cantaloupes that were shipped by tractor-trailer loads to grocery chains throughout the region. One of his proudest accomplishments was having his watermelons served at the White House during President Ronald Reagan’s administration, a testament to the quality of his work and the pride he took in everything he did.
After retiring from DuPont at 50, Jimmy’s experience was so valued that he was brought back as a consultant, a role that took him across the globe to Indonesia, Brazil, Germany, and Japan. Five years later, James and Margaret embraced a wonderful new chapter of life in Cherry Grove. Together they purchased and managed oceanfront condominiums, where Jimmy became much more than a property manager. He took immense pride in every detail, especially making sure the swimming pool sparkled each day. More importantly, he made every guest feel welcome. He loved visiting with families, learning about their lives, playing with children, sharing stories, and making lifelong friends. Many guests returned year after year not only because they loved Cherry Grove, but because they looked forward to seeing Slim and Margaret.
When he wasn’t working, Jimmy could often be found on the golf course. As former members of the Surf Club, he and Margaret shared many wonderful days on the greens, forging deep friendships that extended as well to their church community at Ocean Drive Presbyterian.
Throughout the years, our family has been blessed by hearing countless stories from people whose lives were made brighter because they crossed paths with him. His kindness, warm smile, generous heart, and genuine interest in others created friendships that lasted decades. He had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel like family.
Although vascular dementia gradually took away many of his memories, it never erased the love his family and friends had for him. His example of generosity, hard work, humility, and compassion will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
Jimmy will be deeply missed but forever remembered with gratitude, admiration, and love.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11:30 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate a man whose life was truly well lived. Celebration will be held at Sedgefield, 5910 North Ocean Blvd. in North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 and memories will be shared starting at 1 pm.
