Rock Hill, SC – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Thomas Cato, who left us on July 17, 2025, at the age of 87. Tom was born on September 28, 1937, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to James Carson Cato and Sarah Hyatt Cato, who both preceded him in death. He lived a life rich in experiences, values, and profound connections that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca A. Cato, with whom he shared a deep and abiding love that spanned decades. Their partnership was a testament to devotion and companionship, and their bond grew stronger with each passing year.
Throughout his life, Tom embodied a steadfast spirit and an analytical mind. Known for his great memory and logical reasoning, he approached life with a stoic demeanor that inspired those around him. His interests were diverse, with a particular passion for family genealogy, which reflected his deep appreciation for history and connection. He often engaged in discussions of Roman and Greek philosophy, drawing wisdom from the ancients that resonated with his personal journey.
Tom proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard, a commitment that highlighted his dedication to his country and community. His professional life at IBM in Sales Marketing showcased his keen intellect and dedication to excellence, where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
A devoted family man, Tom loved nothing more than spending time at the beach, creating cherished memories with his loved ones. He understood the importance of family and instilled in his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, integrity, and the pursuit of knowledge.
His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of many, but the legacy he leaves behind is one of strength, wisdom, and love. His family and friends will forever remember him for his quiet strength, his insightful conversations, and the genuine warmth he brought to every gathering.
A graveside funeral service will be held to honor Tom’s life on July 22, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Ebenezer ARP Cemetery, located at 2132 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the remarkable life of this extraordinary man.
