Rock Hill, SC – Joseph (Joe) E. Sherer Jr. died Sunday, March 16 at Westminster Towers Respite Care.
A memorial service will be held at 3p.m. on Saturday, March 22 at Oakland Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Ramsey officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the memorial service.
Joe was born in Rock Hill, SC in 1938 and is the son of Joseph Earl Sherer, Sr. and Kally Lou Nell Mitchell. He was a graduate of Winthrop Training School and attended Clemson University. Joe married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Lee Tipping while at Clemson. They were happily married for 51 years.
Joe worked for Celanese Industries for several years until Bill Wilson, DDS and Connie Baker, DDS offered him training and a job as an in-house dental technician. After a few years, he began Sherer Dental Laboratory. The business grew to become one of the largest industry leaders in the country.
Joe was active in the community. He served for many years as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon at Oakland Baptist Church. He was a speaker and fundraiser for the first Hospice to serve the Rock Hill area after they cared for his mother as one of their first patients. He served on the Board of York County Habitat for Humanity. He was actively involved with the founding and development of the Rock Hill Free Dental Clinic. He also served on the Medical University of South Carolina Board of Visitors.
Joe loved nothing more than spending time with family and close friends, especially on Lake Wylie or in North Myrtle Beach. He loved to shag and also enjoyed playing golf and traveling. He was an avid fan of Clemson football and tailgating.
Joe was known for his generosity, kindness, never meeting a stranger, and making everyone feel special and “like family”. He was a role model for his children and grandchildren on how to be the best spouse, parent, friend, businessman and man of faith.
Mr. Sherer is survived by his wife Bonnie Simmons Sherer, his daughters Denise Owens (Dee) and Deborah McKone (Debbie) and his son Joseph E. Sherer III (Tripp) and his wife Jacqueline; seven grandchildren, Phillip B. Owens and his wife Erin, Aaron McKone, Chelsie Sherer Williams and her husband, Chase, June Sherer, Joseph E. Sherer IV (Joey), Isabella Sherer (Bella) and Sophie Sherer; and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his 3 stepdaughters Rose Daigle (Steve), Beth Elkins (Charles), Katie Cochran (Bo) and their children Sam Daigle, Jake Daigle, Wells Elkins, Kate Elkins, and Anderson Cochran.
