Mantha Spruill Peeler, age 81, passed away April 15, 2024. She was born March 6, 1943, in Danville, Illinois to Morris and Virginia Spruill.

She graduated from Winthrop College with a master’s degree in elementary education and dedicated over 35 years to teaching.

56 years ago, she married James Anthony Peeler, a decorated Navy veteran, with whom she had one daughter, Amy Peeler Lail of Rock Hill.

She devoted her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, finding immense joy in her daughter and grandchildren.  She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she previously served as an Elder.  She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, March of Dimes, and was a dedicated advocate for military veterans and underprivileged children.  Mantha enjoyed her family, going to see plays, cross stich, ceramics, and making stained glass.  She was a social butterfly, participating in bridge clubs and the “Peanuts Gang,” affectionately referred as her “lady friends” by her grandchildren.

She was genuine to a fault, a real kitten (or tiger), and never sugar coated anything. Everyone always knew where they stood with her.  With her extensive vocabulary and meticulous attention to grammar, she earned a reputation as a very strict teacher, although all her students adored her.

All who knew her will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent) and undying love and caring for them. She will be greatly missed.

She is predeceased by her parents, Morris, and Virginia Spruill. She is survived by her husband, James Peeler, daughter, Amy Lail, sister, Sherrod Noe, granddaughters Morgan and Katie Lail, and many nephews and nieces.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, 1830 Celanese Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Dr, Matthews, NC 28104 where her parents are laid to rest.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 26, 2024, from 5:30-7:00 pm at Greene Funeral Home, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC, 29732.
