Rock Hill – Margaret Pauline “Polly” Schuerg passed away September 14, 2023 at Piedmont Medical Center.  She grew up in Salisbury NC, the third oldest of seven children.  After her mother died young, Polly headed west on an adventure with a girlfriend.  While waitressing in a café in Corpus Christi, she met and married a German Texan, William Schuerg. Known to most as “Bill”, he and Polly eventually settled back in Gastonia, NC, where most of her family lived.

Together they raised two children – a son, Ronnie, who died young of polio and a daughter, Karen, who was an accomplished pianist.  Polly and Bill were always active in church and enjoyed ballroom dancing with a small group of friends as a hobby. Polly was an excellent seamstress and often handmade their dance attire.

Polly loved the outdoors and especially flowers. She was a very talented floral designer and spent most of her career at Akers Florist in Gastonia.  Married over 50 years, Polly and Bill eventually retired to the Lake Wylie area, where they enjoyed lake life.  Her yard there was a showpiece!  She loved sharing bulbs (especially amaryllis) with friends and neighbors.  She was a great cook and baker, making the best homemade enchiladas, breads and ice cream.  She was known for her quick wit, ability to make perfect bows and her love of margaritas.  Polly lived her last years as a resident of Westminster Towers in Rock Hill, SC, where she was active in yoga, volleyball and water aerobics.  She really missed getting in the pool these last few months.

Polly was preceded in death by her parents, Gurney and Viola; husband, Bill; children, Ronnie and Karen; brothers and sisters, Ruth, Everett, Jim, Frances and Bettye. Polly is survived by her brother, Cecil Frye; sister-in-law, Barbara; niece, Beverly of Belmont, NC; granddaughter Heather Grooms (Jason); two great granddaughters Cora and Audrey of Matthews, NC.

She was blessed with lifelong family friends Holli Pence of Charleston, SC and Ernie Davis of Conway, SC.  She was forever grateful for the many years of loving care from her lifelong family friend, Mary Beth Hughes of Rock Hill, SC.

Immediate arrangements will be handled by Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel in Rock Hill, SC.  The family is planning a Celebration of Life to be held at Westminster Towers, with inurnment at Gaston Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
