Margaret Williams Spakes passed away on November 29, 2025 at The Oaks of Beaufort.
Margaret was born April 06, 1927 to Clyde and Edna Williams in Pickens County, SC. After attending Rock Hill High, she began her work career with the Hoechst Celanese Corporation and retired 46 years later as a quality control analyst.
In 1946 Margaret met John William Spakes, the love of her life. They were married on July 13, 1946 and spent the next 56 years totally dedicated to each other. They were newlyweds until the death of Bill in 2002. They had one son, Dr. J. William Spakes (Butch), and twin daughters Janice Spakes McGuirt and Janet Spakes Wright. They had four grandchildren, Dr. Brantlee Spakes Richter, Garron Wright, Dr. William Wright, and Dr. SarahMargaret McGuirt Mason. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren. Margaret’s family meant more to her than almost anything. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren and would let all know how proud she was of who they were and what they had accomplished.
Margaret was a devout Christian being strong in her faith. Margaret and Bill guided their children in their steadfast belief in God and the amazing power of prayer. She supported College Park Baptist Church from inception till her move to Harbor Island, SC in 2019.
Margaret was a skilled artist. She enjoyed creating using crochet, cross stitch, tatting, and sewing. One was lucky to receive a gift created by Margaret. Her other joy was gardening. She had a talent that brought a yard vibrant with color. She loved nature and her favorite place was anywhere outside.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, John William (Bill) Spakes, Sr., father, James Clyde Williams Sr., mother, Edna Few Williams, and brother, James Clyde Williams, Jr. She is survived by her son, Butch, daughters, Janice and Janet, grandchildren, Brantlee, Garron, Will, and SarahMargaret. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Reynolds, Shirley Cudd, and JoAnn Taylor. She was blessed with many nieces and nephews of whom she often remembered with love and affection.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Margaret’s name to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.
