Marvin Mack Thompson Jr. 76 passed away on January 9, 2025 at his home with his loving family and friends. Marvin was born on October 3, 1948 in Martinsville, Virginia. He was the son of the late Truman and Edith Stone of North Wilkesboro, N.C.
Marvin Thompson was a welder who began working for Environmental Control in Charlotte, N.C. He retired from Cato’s Welding and Fabrication in Rock Hill, S.C. in 2009.
Marvin was an avid bass fisherman who enjoyed spending his free time on Lake Wylie. He enjoyed aviation and NASCAR racing and frequently attended airshows and races. Also, he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad with his family and friends. His favorite hobby throughout life was sharing time with family and friends as often as possible, and spending time with his three Labrador “mutts”, Baylee, Abby, and Callie Thompson.
Sergeant Thompson served as an Airborne Paratrooper with the 101st and the 82nd divisions in Vietnam during 1968. While in the US Army, Sergeant Thompson received two Bronze Stars for heroism in combat and other decorations.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marie. He is also survived by his brother, Monty Ray Thomspon (Becki); brother-in-law, Eugene B Roach Jr (Linda), sister-in-law, Karen Chrisley (Johnny). Extended family includes: nieces, Nicole Thompson Perkins (Jason), goddaughter, Kimberly Roach Arnold (Timothy), Misty Chrisley O’Donnell (Matt, and nephew Toby Chrisley (Wendy). Great nephews including: Jonah Cade Perkins, Patrick O’Donnell, Pierce O’Donnell, Thomas Chrisley, and Tillman Chrisley.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 20, 2025 at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary of Neely’s Creek ARP Church where Marvin was an active member for over 50 years, and the Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 pm. The service will be officiated by Rev. Matt Joldersma of Neely’s Creek ARP Church at 974 Neely’s Creek Road, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730. Following the service interment will be held at Neely’s Creek Cemetery with full military rites.
