Mary Ann Ruhl Thomas passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at 92 years of age. She was born in Lansing, Michigan to Harry DeVere Ruhl and Anna Mason Ruhl. She was a woman who had a deep Christian faith, a gentle spirit, and lifelong curiosity. She was predeceased by her older brothers, DeVere and Elwood.

Mary Ann grew up in Lansing, Michigan before pursuing higher education at Michigan State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and Journalism. Her passion for faith and service led her to continue her studies, earning a Master’s Degree in Religion from Garrett Theological Seminary and a second master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago.

While in Chicago, Mary Ann met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Thomas. The two were married in 1966, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in love, faith, and mutual support. Following Bob’s career, they relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Mary Ann devoted more than 35 years to serving others in the mental health field. Her work with Charlotte- Mecklenburg Mental Health, Gaston Mental Health, and the Saluda Center reflected her deep compassion and commitment to helping those in need. Mary Ann had a love of learning and was a voracious reader. She loved to write poetry and had several poems and books published. She loved to serve her community through the ministry of Feed the Hungry in Rock Hill at Blackmon Road. She was a founding member of Lake Wylie Lutheran Church in Tega Cay where she served on church council and was involved with Stephen Ministries.

Her greatest joy was her family, including her three sons Rob (Christie), David (Teresa), and Mike (Lucy), as well as eight grandchildren (Ashlyn, Mason, Brooke, Charlotte, Norah, Will, Henry, and Anna). She devoted her time and love to them faithfully, spending time baking with them and knitting blankets, ponchos, and stuffed animals for them. She loved and adored her nieces and nephews who reside across the country.

A memorial service will be held at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel at 2133 Ebenezer Avenue in Rock Hill at 10:00 am on Saturday March 28, 2026. Family will receive friends immediately following the service. Donations may be made to Lake Wylie Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.
