Mary Anne Garvin Throgmorton, 91, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026 in Rock Hill, SC. Born on December 27, 1934, in Rock Hill, SC, she lived a life rich in love, learning, and service to others.
She is survived by her daughter Julianne T. Williford (Bud); granddaughters Sarah Annmarie Collins (Jared); Mary Elissa Johnston; and great granddaughter Ava Kait Collins. She was predeceased by her parents Julius George Garvin and Mary Julia Swetenburg Garvin; her beloved sons Brian Keith Throgmorton and Ian Douglas Throgmorton.
Mary Anne was a dedicated scholar from an early age. She attended Winthrop Training School and Rock Hill High School where she excelled as an honor student. She was chosen as Miss Hi-Miss, crowned May Queen of the May Court and served as a Junior Marshal. She was a member of the Bearcat staff, president of Future Teachers of America, secretary of her homeroom, secretary of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the French club, and member of the Beta Club. Her passion for education led her to Winthrop College where she continued to thrive and excel in education, earning a master’s degree in English and Literature. This foundation paved the way for her remarkable 35-year career at Northwestern High School as a beloved English and Literature teacher. Mary Anne’s influence extended far beyond the classroom, where she was also known as a loving friend and mentor to countless colleagues and students.
As the wife of a decorated Marine fighter pilot, Mary Anne embraced the challenges and adventures of military life with grace and resilience. She traveled extensively with her husband and three children, living in Santa Ana, CA; St. Andrews, Scotland; Parris Island, Beaufort, SC; and Quantico, VA. Despite the demands of frequent relocations, she created homes filled with comfort, love and stability for her family.
As a lifelong member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, Mary Anne found joy in her faith community, where she formed lasting friendships that enriched her life immeasurably. She sang in the choir and participated actively in church life.
Mary Anne’s hobbies reflected her creative spirit and nurturing nature. She found joy in reading, writing poetry, gardening, sewing, knitting, needlepoint, crochet, cooking, baking, sitting with her cats, and walking with her dogs. Her love for music extended beyond worship. Classical music was a constant presence in her home.
Mary Anne’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched as an educator, friend, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and through the countless memories shared by those who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 15 at 2:00pm at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, officiated by Reverend Dr. Jeff Bryan. A private inurnment will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery, Old York Highway.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church or York County Humane Society.
