Mary D. Swartout, 92, passed away on May 6, 2025. She was born in Colón, Panama, on July 3, 1932.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Swartout.
She is survived by her son, George Swartout Jr. (Adele); daughters, Doris VanBenschoten (Richard) and Elizabeth Wagner (Brian); grandchildren, Mary K. Kujawa (John), Greg VanBenschoten (Sara), Gwen Haney (Mark), Carrieann Torres (Rob), Matt Swartout, and Joe Swartout (Breanna); sixteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was a devoted homemaker who loved to read and crochet. She had a deep passion for gardening and was especially proud of her beautiful roses. She also had a large Barbie doll collection and was an avid fan of Star Trek.
Mary loved spending time with her family—whether it was shopping trips, visiting craft shows, outings to the mountains to find the perfect Christmas tree, or simply enjoying fun and laughter at family gatherings.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary Swartout’s name to BrightFocus Foundation for National Glaucoma Research at 22512 Gateway Center Dr., Clarksburg, MD 20871.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. A private family service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date.
