It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Gene Phillips, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this earthly life on March 17, 2026, at the age of 78. Michael left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, in Rock Hill, SC.
Born on November 28, 1947, in Portsmouth, VA, Michael was the cherished son of the late Gene Tunney Phillips and Evelyn Conklin Phillips. He grew up with a deep sense of family, which he carried throughout his life. Michael’s dedication to his family was unparalleled, and his legacy of love and kindness will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
Michael’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to serving his country. As a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, he proudly served for over 22.5 years, earning numerous accolades, including a Commendation Medal, NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal, among others. His dedication to his country was only rivaled by his dedication to his family and faith.
A man of deep faith, Michael was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC, where he faithfully served his church community for over 19 years. His spirit and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him, and his contributions to the church were a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to service.
Michael’s life was enriched by his love for his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Carol Sue Phillips, with whom he shared a life full of love and cherished memories. He is also survived by his loving daughter, Erica Taylor, and her husband, Chris; his treasured son, Rob Phillips; and his adored grandchildren, Austin Taylor (Pressley), Eric Taylor (Macy), Logan Taylor (Nikki), along with two grandsons in San Diego, CA. Michael was also blessed with one great-grandchild, bringing joy and laughter to his days. In addition to his immediate family, Michael is survived by his dear aunt, Ruth Cole, and her husband Marvin of Burlington, NC, as well as numerous cousins who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Michael had a passion for life that was evident in all he did. He loved spending time with his grandkids, sharing stories and laughter that will be fondly remembered. His love for his chihuahua was well-known, as was his enthusiasm for firearms, a hobby he pursued with dedication and skill.
As we gather to celebrate Michael’s life, we find comfort in the memories we shared and the love he gave so freely. A Celebration Of Life service to honor Michael will be held on March 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Crown Memorial Park, 9620 Rodney St, Pineville, NC 28134.
