Rock Hill, SC – Oliver B. James, Jr, 76, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at his home.
Mr. James was born on August 20, 1946, to the late Oliver B. James, Sr. and Bethany Jones James, in Mullins, SC. He attended Aynor High School and graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree at the University of South Carolina in 1968. He later obtained a Master’s Degree from Winthrop University. He went on to work for Bowater for over 35 years. During his time with the company, he worked as an engineer and then manager in computer and process control systems. In his free time, he enjoyed farming, gardening, and helping with the Junior Achievement Program as an extracurricular activity in conjunction with Bowater. He also enjoyed welcoming kids from school groups onto his farm to interact with the goats and other animals. He was a very loving and caring father and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean W. James; his sons, Oliver Bennett James III and Thomas DuBose James (Tracy); his sisters, Janis Allen, Phyllis James, and Pam Hart; his grandson, Thomas DuBose James, Jr. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver B. James, Sr. and Bethany James.
A funeral service will be held at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave, Rock Hill, SC 29730, at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 6, 2023. The family will receive visitors after the service at the church. A private graveside will be held following the service at Neely’s Creek Church Cemetery, 974 Neely’s Creek Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
