Penny Ruth Mitchell, 75, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by the family she loved so deeply and who loved her unconditionally.
Born in Ridley Township, Pennsylvania, Penny was the daughter of the late William and Marjorie Mitchell.
Penny’s greatest blessing and purpose in life was her family. She had a selfless heart and spent her life putting the needs of others before her own. Whether she was working on a puzzle, reading a good book, taking a cruise, or simply enjoying time together, she found joy in the people she loved most.
She was her family’s biggest cheerleader. Penny rarely missed an opportunity to watch her son coach football, proudly followed her grandson’s college football career, and treasured every moment she spent watching her great-grandchildren grow. Her happiest days were those spent surrounded by family, laughter, and the memories they created together.
She is survived by her children, Heather Brenner (Scott Brenner), Mark Shook Sr. (Holly Shook), and Holly Hall. She also leaves behind Michael Shook, with whom she shared her children and many treasured family memories.
Penny’s love lives on through her grandchildren: Jacqueline Peterson, Anthony Peterson (Aimee Peterson), Bradley Brenner, Karyli Brooke White (Kwavontae White), Mikayla Greene (Josh Greene), Michael Shook, Savannah Winn, Morgan Kate Winn, Beau Winn, Randall Meredith, Mitchell Hall, and Carter Hall.
She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Peterson, Lilly Peterson, Luke Peterson, Hudson White, and Reese Greene, each of whom brought joy to her life.
In addition to her parents, Penny was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael Mitchell and Robert Mitchell.
Penny will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. She faced cancer with remarkable courage and grace, never allowing it to diminish the love she so freely gave to those around her. Her family finds comfort in knowing that her final years were spent in a home filled with love, laughter, adventures, and the everyday moments shared with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she leaves behind and the love she poured into her family will continue to be carried forward for generations.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Humane Society in Penny’s memory.
