Rock Hill, South Carolina — Mrs. Sophie Rayfield Jones, age 80, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her children on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Sophie was born on January 11, 1946, to the late Clifford and Bessie Rayfield. She was a native of Rock Hill and retired from Winthrop University. Sophie was a devoted member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene and cherished her faith, family, and the time she spent surrounded by those she loved.
Sophie was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her grandchildren dearly. She was always there for her family, offering guidance, encouragement, and an answer for nearly every question. Her family often joked that she was their doctor, lawyer, weatherwoman, and so much more. Her wisdom, care, and unwavering love made her a source of comfort and strength to everyone who knew her.
Sophie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael Jones; granddaughter, Haley West; brother, J.C. Rayfield; and her parents, Clifford and Bessie Rayfield.
She is survived by her sister, Sondra DuBose; and her children, Tammy Windham (Keith), Duane Ledbetter (Pamela), Misty Harrison (Jamie), and Kristy Daniels (Joe).
Sophie leaves behind a loving family of grandchildren: Jennifer Cooper (Adam), Alexander Windham (Jamie), Morgan Lathan (Jerry), Alexas Hinson (Austin), Cooper Ledbetter (Allie), Kaylea Sims (Todd), Mary Jo Harrison (Bryan), Steven Ledbetter, Audrey Dresner (Matt), and Madelynn Harrison.
She was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren: Dillon Cooper, Emma Cooper, Abby Cooper, Waylon Lathan, Wyatt Trent, Blakley Lathan, Jackson Sims, Landry Hinson, Sammy Windham, Eli Ledbetter, Landon Sims, Leslie Hinson, Colton Alverson, Jane Ledbetter, and Archie Ledbetter.
Sophie will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to her family, her deep love for her grandchildren, and the many memories she created with the children and grandchildren she loved so dearly. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her love, wisdom, and legacy will live on through the generations of family she leaves behind.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2026 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Church of the Nazarene, 1029 Mt. Gallant Road, Rock Hill, SC. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
